Newborn baby rescued from underground storm drain in Durban

Emergency workers rescued a baby girl who got stuck in a storm drain in a suburb of Durban, South Africa, on Monday morning.

Rescue Care, which took part in the rescue, said passers-by alerted emergency services after they heard the cries of the infant, who was lodged a few metres into the storm drain.

The area around the concrete drain was dug up before the drain was broken with a hammer and chisel.

The baby was recovered and flown to a hospital in Durban where she was reportedly treated for mild hypothermia.
